Desktop bundle specials at Best Buy this week

Yes, this is a laptop blog, but we all need desktops too! If it wasn't for desktops, who would hold our desks in place and keep them from floating in outer space? :)

We start with a computer+monitor+printer bundle that's not bad at all! We are talking about the eMachines ET1161-07 bundled with the 18.5" E181H monitor and the Canon IP2600 printer, all together for one low price of $480 and of course WITHOUT rebates. None of the Best Buy specials require rebates!

So you are getting a desktop with an AMD dual-core 4050e processor, 3gb memory, 320gb disk, dvd burner, and NVidia GeForce 6150SE graphics. Not bad considering the price and the 18.5" widescreen LCD monitor, eh?

Next up, for $550, you can get a better bundle from Acer. Better and $70 more expensive, making it a good candidate for a trade-off comparison. The display here is a 20" Acer X203H, and the printer is the Canon MP240. The desktop itself, is the Acer AX1700-U3700A and it comes with a Pentium dual-core E2200 processor, 4gb memory, 640gb disk, NVidia G100 graphics with 512mb dedicated memory, dvd burner and all the usual amenities you would expect from a desktop. All things considered, this may be a BETTER DEAL than the eMachines, unless of course price is a factor in the decision.

best buy

And now we move to another set of trade-offs, jumping from a dual-core to a quad-core processor. That's where we find the HP A6700y bundle, for $650. The display here is smaller (20" widescreen LCD), but the processor is an AMD Phenom X4 quad-core 9150e, with 4gb memory, half a terabyte of storage, nVidia 6150 SE, and wireless-G even. A color printer is also included in this bundle. But if you prefer a 22" display instead, you can "upgrade" to that for an extra $70, bringing the price of the new bundle to $720.

And now yet another twist, back to a dual-core processor, but from Intel (Core2 Duo E7400), with SIX gigabytes of memory and 750gb hard disk. So you get a better but dual-core processor, with 50% more memory and hard disk. Trade-offs, trade-offs. The bundled display is a 19" LCD and the printer is an Epson NX105. The computer itself, is the Dell Inspiron I530-120B.

From here we return to quad-cores with the Gateway LX6810-01 bundle for $900. A 22" LCD widescreen is included, with EIGHT (8gb) of memory, and a 640gb hard disk. But you get a nice video card too, an NVidia Gt120 with 1gb of dedicated memory. Yum! One gigabyte of dedicate memory! Bring on the games of 2009 :) You can also watch-and-record TV out of the box, and of course you get all sorts of other things. And we almost forgot to mention, the quad-core here is the Intel Core2 Duo Q8200.

Staying with quad-cores, but switching to the AMD X4 9750 is the HP M9500Y bundled with a 22" HP W2207H LCD widescreen. This bundle approaches four-figures ($980), and includes a healty eight gigabytes of memory, 750gb hard disk, dvd burner, and NVidia 9500GS with 512MB of dedicated memory. And of course the usual stuff, from dvd burner to coffee brewer ;-)

Last, but certainly not least, is the Dell Studio XPS SXPS-122B, managing to blend in almost all the Dell buzzwords. Only thing missing a (PRODUCT red) designation ;-) This goes for $1100 and has 4gb of DDR3 memory, 640gb disk, ATI Radeon 4850 graphics with 512mb decicated memory, and things like that. Also cutting edge, the 20" widescreen display is the Dell S2009W, which has a 16:9 aspect ratio, ideal for those who like to watch widescreen video on their computers. And before we forget, this uses the Intel Core i7-920 processor, which, despite the different numbers in its name, is a four-core processor :) Oh, and the printer bundled is the Epson NX105.

Again, please keep in mind that all the prices above are without rebates, and none of them offer any rebates. So if you hate rebates, Best Buy hates them too :)

Desktop specials at Office Depot

It's not too late to get some of the Office Depot desktop specials that are set to expire on Sunday morning. So, let's get started!

We start with the lowest price, the Compaq Presario SR5710F for $300 after a $70 mail-in rebate, which means you pay $370 in-store. This has an AMD dual-core 4450e+ processor, 3gb memory, 250gb disk, dvd burner with lightscribe, and things like that. Monitor not included by the way!

Next up, for $430 after a $50 MIR you can get the Acer AX1700-U3700A which uses 64-bit Windows in order to make the best of its 4gb memory. The hard drive is at 640gb, with dvd burner of course, and an Intel Pentium E2220 dual-core processor. Monitor is not included, but for an extra $100 you can add the Acer X183Hb monitor for $100 - no rebates. You can buy this monitor independently, you don't have to buy it with an Acer computer.

But if you prefer a power-bundle, for $550 after two mail-in rebates of $220 total, you can get the HP A6742PB bundled with the 19" HP widescreen LCD monitor. The computer comes with the Pentium E5300 dual-core processor, and 64-bit Vista allows you to max out the 6gb of memory (yep, six gigabytes). The disk is half a terabyte, and of course dvd burning is included. This is a quantities limited promotion. The desktop by the way is the typical tower-type.

Two trios of desktops at Best Buy

Sure laptops are everywhere, but how about some love for the desktops? They have been everyone's favorite punching bag, but you really can't replace a good desktop if you need desktop functionality :)

And this week's Best Buy circular features a trio of desktops, each one coming bundled with an LCD monitor.

We start with the Acer AX1700-U1710A at $430, a rather reasonable price considering the 20" widescreen LCD monitor that is included. The computer itself has the dual-core Celeron E1400 processor, 3gb memory, 320gb hard disk, NVidia GeForce G100 graphics, dvd burner of course, wireless-N, and everyone's other favorite punching bag, Vista Premium.

Next up, at $500, we find the HP S3700Y desktop bundled with the HP W1907 monitor. The monitor is "only" a 19-incher by the way. The processor is a Athlon X2 dual-core 5000, with 3gb memory, 32g0b disk, dvd burner and NVidia 6150 SE. And of course all the other expected features, including Vista Premium.

Last but not least is the HP S3720Y bundled with the 22-inch HP W2207H monitor for $630. The processor here is the Pentium E5200 dual-core, with 4gb memory, half a terabyte hard disk, dvd burner and NVidia 7100 graphics module.

So the decision is yours, desktop or laptop? :-)

But we are not done yet, now we move to the second trio which includes the more expensive models.

We start with the Gateway LX6810-01, bundled with the 19" HD1900 LCD monitor and the Canon MP240 printer for $850. No rebates as usual, as we all know by now that Best Buy hates rebates with a passion. The monitor may be small but you get 8gb of memory, 640gb hard disk, and the Intel Core2 Quad Q8200 processor. Take that slow programs and memory hogs!!! But that's not all, the graphics card has some gifts too, it has its own 1gb of dedicated memory. The card being the NVidia GeForce GT120. Yum?

If you prefer a bundle, but a bigger display and a lower price, HP has an alternative for you! For $800, you get these pieces:
+ HP A6755Y computer
+ HP W2207H display (22 inches)
+ all-in-one F4280 printer

The computer, the HP A6755Y comes with the AMD X4 quad-core 9500 processor, 6gb of memory (versus eight above), 640gb hard disk, and a more modest graphics card, the ATI Radeon HD 3200 with 256mb of dedicated memory. Not bad!

And we close with something more expensive, four figures actually. At $1200 you get the HP M9515Y desktop, with the 22-inch HP W2207H display and the F4820 all-in-one printer. Apart from a quad-core AMD X4 9850 processor, you get 8gb of memory, 750gb hard disk, the NVidia 9600GS memory card with 768mb dedicated memory, dvd burner but also the ability to play BluRay discs. That's not all, it has plenty of other features, including TV recording, wireless-N, lightscribe and a whole lot more!

And this concludes our desktop round-up at Best Buy for this week!

Laptop specials at Fry's

Let's take a quick look at the latest Fry's ad to see if they have any laptops of interest out there!

We start with a Microsoft-funded promotion, you can get their Rainier 15.4" laptop backpack if you purchase it together with a laptop for just $20. If you buy it on its own, without a laptop to hold in its blue-screen arms, then the price you pay is $48. No rebates are required either way.

The biggest price deal is the Toshiba L305D-S5940 going for a mere $400. This is a limited time offer, probably in-store only. You can't complain about a Toshi for $400! This lovely has an Athlon 64 X2 DC QL-60 processor, 2gb memory (okay, complain here), 160gb disk, dvd burner, 15.4" display. As you can see from the specs it's a slightly older model, but if you love Toshis, then grab it if you can! And don't forget to get the MSFT-subsidized laptop backpack for an extra $20.

Next we move to a more advanced Toshiba, the L305-S5939 which goes for $550 (not a bad price either) and may have limited availability and such. It has a Centrino Core-2-Duo T6400 processor set, 4gb memory, 320gb disk, 64-bit Vista, 15.4" WXGA, and all the usual stuff you would expect to find with such a notebook.

And that's about it as far as Wintels. On the Apple front, you get a ...granny ;-) Okay, seriously now, the advertised MacBook is the 15.4" MacBookPro for $1950 (hello Apple fans, you are getting ripped by Apple!), which has a 2.4 GHz Core2 Duo processor, 15.4" display (LED backlit, 1440x900), unibody construction, 2gb DDR3 memory, 250gb SATA HDD, slot-loading Superdrive, webcam (or should I call it iWebcam?), and things like that. Also of note, an NVidia 9600M GT video card with 256gb DDR3 memory of its very own. You also get the Mac OS X 10.5 Kitten operating system. Or is it Cheetah? Or Leopard? :-)

Acomdata 1000USE-72 for $120

Storage! Storage! Storage! More! More! More! The waves of data are pounding at the shores of Storage! Okay, enough silliness for one day. The purpose of this post is to let you know of a nice deal on the Acomdata 1000USE-72 1TB external hard disk offered by J&R World for $120 and with free shipping and handling. This is both a USB and eSATA PureDrive.

Once upon a time one terabyte was a lot of storage, but with the advent of video and high-megapixel digital cameras, this is no longer the case. You can easily fill up the terabyte in no time. Even documents are bloated these days, at least if you are using one of the bloatware office suites (wink, wink).
